The Girl Scout's Distinguished Women Awards Virtual Event
On July 22, we were honored to produce this year’s virtual “Distinguished Women Awards” for Girl Scouts of Central Maryland. We first met last year when we were selected to create the first successful virtual edition of this yearly event. This was back when virtual events just started their rise in popularity because of the shutdown. After one full year of hosting virtual events, we learned a lot and brought plenty of fresh ideas to the table for this year’s ceremony.
The Distinguished Women Awards
The Distinguished Women Awards honored five local women leaders for their exemplary professional accomplishments and community contributions. Prior to the event, honorees were paired with a high school-aged Girl Scout, who spent a day with the Honoree to shadow her in her role and learn more about how she navigated her career. The virtual event then served as a space to recap and celebrate the events of the day the mentors and girl scouts spent together.
For our team, this event was particularly special because it showed how far we’ve come in the last year amid a spiral of challenging conditions. Last year, our earliest virtual events felt more like a way to get through COVID with some type of event. This year, we’ve managed to make it a more engaging experience for volunteers, viewers, and the girl scouts themselves.
Our favorite new addition to this year’s event was probably the introduction of pre-recorded engaging content. We suggested reuniting the five mentors with the girl scouts they previously spent the day with and filmed their recollections of the time spent together. We captured discussions about what the mentorship day was like, what it meant to them, what leadership means to them, and so on. They had never done this before, and we are thrilled with the results and the new opportunities the filming of the post mentorship conversation presents. These conversations not only provided engaging content for their virtual event; they began a library of content for future honorees to gain insight into making the most of this valuable relationship for generations to come.
Of course, we’re always looking for ways to make our virtual and in-person events even better! We’re already brainstorming new ideas for the 2022 Distinguished Women Awards. For an even more engaging experience, we have discussed the possibility of onsite filming of the mentorship days and sharing these conversations at the hopefully, live events going forward.
We’d like to thank the Girl Scouts of Central Maryland and their five Distinguished Honorees for such an amazing experience!
